Spaces: Formal and Not
See also: -[Perforamcne Ritual: A Karete Meet]-
We often realise that the space into which
we are perform a work is not necessarily
ideal. In many cases the preparers "measure"
the space and lay it out. In the a case of
formal spaces it may be "dusted" by the
shaman or an assistant to clear away
"evil spirits" (or at least narggles).
The placing of ceremonial objects as well as
where the audience (if any) will be are also
addressed. In such cases, the "ideal" formal
(sacred, traditional, etc) space is thus
translated into the space at hand. We would
also say that the space at hand is transformed
by the various purifying acts into the sacred
space.
Note: Things like this happen all the time: A
quorum is called, the master at arms protects
the gateway to the space, recorders and/or
whitnesses draw near, etc. When we watch a
"police line do not cross" set of tapes being
set up, we are watching that process of
impropteau purification of the space - oh, if
only would murder-er-s be so considerate to
ONLY kill their victims in a controlled and
designated space ;) -- i'm thinking of shows
like CSI and trying to maintain a "crime scene".
From lovers trying to find a secluded space
to smooch, to a CSI investigator finding a
room to question whitnesses -- all are along
the same path. Of course, we realise that
much of the reification of art-act is this
process of "purifying".
As such, in theory, any space may become a formal
and/or sacred space. Consider chess players setting
out salt and pepper shakers on a checkerboard
table cloth and having a game of chess.
