One idea is that the *technique* and skills are 
passed down, generation to generation by the 
tribal artists (and here we read "tribal" to
include contemporary art schools, medieval, etc, etc, etc).

However, styles and usage will of course evolve. And as
long as the tribe/community remains healthy, these 
skills and hence the STYLES will continue onward and
*not* vanish into the past to be picked up as *mere*
-[relics]-.
